The DC police chief, on network TV,
Seemed rather amused — yes, he could agree
That crime would come down, that down it would go —
But only with 22 inches of snow
The crime rate came down, Mr. Chief, if you please —
We missed you out there on your cross-country skis
Tourism was up, all-time record high —
People love winter sports . . . in DC . . . in July
Twenty-two inches of snow there was not
Temperatures soared to way hotter than hot
Crime should have soared — but instead it went down —
How do you explain such a thing in your town?
President Clinton had been on a roll —
Careening downhill, and feeling the toll
The nation was nervous, with deep, widespread doubt —
Would this new President really work out?
What happened next was completely surprising —
In the space of a week, his star began rising
The city relaxed, becoming less stressful
President Clinton became more successful
His bills started passing, the gridlock dissolved
One after another, the problems were solved.
At the Tokyo Summit — how would it go?
Bill Clinton and Hillary were the stars of the show
What caused such an upturn? One thing we know —
It wasn’t the 22 inches of snow
We know the reason — it’s perfectly clear
And most of that reason is gathered right here.
At the helm was John Hagelin, commander in chief
His all-around brilliance transcends all belief
In greeting the courses, in meeting the press
John was a lighthouse, a key to success.
At the center was Kingsley, with five phones in all
He always stood ready to take any call
What he did was pure Kingsley, pure Kingsley alone —
His job was, quite simply, to talk on the phone.
His leadership brilliant, he reached a new height —
As always, his humor was constant delight.
The Wests travelled east to run the accounts
They carried their weight in pure gold, ounce for ounce
With one little challenge en route to success —
Revenues and expenses were anyone’s guess.
Two people with wonderful characteristics
Were David and Skip, who ran the statistics.
With absence of grousing and minimal carousing
Brad Mylett and John Dewey ran all the housing
Their job had its moments, as people all know —
Mother Divine on the buses, with nowhere to go.
Tommy ran flying halls, two dozen in all —
Have cell will travel — he was always on call
Trucking in, laying down foam by the acre —
Your regular day-and-night miracle maker
He sold backjacks and shirts from the back of his truck —
To have Tommy on board was the greatest good luck.
Kathy ran kitchens, all over the town,
Working with cooks to get menus down.
The Malkensons, Bollingers, Murphys, Rists, Grosses —
They poured out the hours in huge megadoses
These folks did everything, everytime, everywhere
Processing, managing, always right there.
Mario was everywhere, running publicity,
While Leslie decked halls with the greatest felicity.
She ran round the city in her own little van
And kept each place pretty, as only she can.
Geoffrey ran knowledge — the tapes were the best,
Intellects were enlightened, as all will attest.
Rolf ran the tapes out to every location
Providing pure knowledge with fine transportation.
When the University of Maryland fell in our lap
Out went the Crowells, with that megaforce — Hap.
Trinity was run by a trinity of saints:
Linda and Christy and Kurt — no complaints.
The Sands and the Nidiches ran Gallaudet,
Forming a team that’s as good as they get.
At the Sheraton, the Rosanias, at Catholic, the Dements —
The competence running this course was immense.
Course leaders like Openshaw, Guthrie, and Deans
Kept knowledge pure, humor high, good routines.
Tom and Roxanne, as might be expected,
Were the factors who kept all the parties connected;
With consummate skill, and as quick as a blink,
The Factors set up the satellite link.
Jefferson set up every video system —
If he hadn’t been there, we sure would have missed him.
How could one person accomplish all this?
And throughout, he was Jefferson, achin’ with bliss.
James ran security — no surprise there
Folks knew they were in the most expert of care.
Susan Shatkin, Sali Peden worked closely with John
While Jennine Fellmer always was “on.”
David Goodman, Steve Schonfeld were really a plus
Just enjoy, they said — leave all the driving to us
(Just don’t ever ask them to travel by bus)
Person after person, name after name
And each name has staked its own claim to great fame
And each of these people make perfectly clear:
Throughout it all, Brahman was Charioteer.
Workloads forced people to make a decision
Something must give, as one might envision
People had to choose between eating and sleeping —
A choice that would cause, in the average guy, weeping
Day after day through the two-month endeavor
We know what we chose — no contest whatever
Sleeping was sacrificed — and people stayed blissed —
But very, very, very few meals were missed
Each evening CPs would take off their shoes
And enter their halls for the day’s nightly news
Move over Tom Brokaw, Dr. Mike’s on the air
And all news is good news, the forecast is fair
As a newscaster, Mike is right up with the best
Impeccably spoken, impeccably dressed
But to keep himself cool giving evening reports,
Below sight of the camera, he simply wore shorts.
The criminals, for their part, were simply tremendous
We’re always so glad for the help they extend us
Just as they’ve always done, time after time,
Exactly on schedule, they backed off on crime,
Avoiding the alleys, gas stations, and banks —
We extend to the criminals the warmest of thanks.
We numbered a thousand the first week in June —
A number we knew would be doubling soon
Over two thousand strong by the Fourth of July —
The number would jump again soon — but how high?
When the final two weeks of July came along,
There we all were, nearly four thousand strong
An army we were, in the literal sense,
Stepping forward to serve in our nation’s defense.
Eighty some nations sent their most elite troops
Two join our strategically located groups.
The thousand and more from abroad on this course
Formed the true United Nations peacekeeping force
Armed with pure knowledge and a simple technique
Our force was invincible, our army unique.
We each turned within and remained self-referraled
And created the silence that was heard round the world.
Five miles of foam, and hops by the millions
Experiences took on a new luster and brilliance
Backed by Purusha and Mother Divine
Programs assumed a new depth, a new shine
As the annals of history are carefully noting:
This course marked the real inception of floating
Up, up, and up — pure bliss, like a tide,
Lifted our bodies from deep, deep inside
It lifted the city beyond our small goal
Pure bliss was what lifted the world as a whole
Pure bliss will sustain us in glorious air
When the Self, by itself, of itself is aware
To float, said Maharishi, is the most natural state
And that’s what, together, we began to create.
So President Clinton: Did you like feeling good?
Feeling on top of the world — as you should?
Feeling like the greatest President of all?
We’re here, out in Iowa, awaiting your call
Of all of the leaders in this promising land
You are the one who would most understand
You are the one, without any doubt,
Who would most understand what this group is about.
This is the time, and you are the man —
You can achieve this if anyone can
Of all of the world’s esteemed heads of state
You can emerge as the great of the great
This is the future you surely deserve —
We’re here, out in Iowa, waiting to serve,
To help you achieve the great dreams that you seek
And ensure that we don’t fall behind Mozambique
Don’t call on soldier, or airman, or troop
Just call on us — call on your group
We’ll know that our message has truly hit home
When we see that you’ve joined us right here on the foam.
Of all the rich memories, so deeply impressed,
There’s one which, for all of us, surely was best
Who will forget, in Constitution Hall,
When Maharishi appeared — nearly thirty feet tall.
The cheering, the flashbulbs all over the place,
The deep surge of feeling, the look on his face
Say what we wish on how crime rate was eased —
Our greatest achievement: Maharishi was pleased.
Maharishi was pleased, and we are fulfilled
Maharishi was pleased — all nature is thrilled.
Eighty some nations sent their most elite troops
Two join our strategically located groups.
The thousand and more from abroad on this course
Formed the true United Nations peacekeeping force
We each turned within and remained self-referraled
And created the silence that was heard round the world.
